OpenAI, or OpenAI LP, is an artificial intelligence research laboratory consisting of the for-profit OpenAI LP and its non-profit parent company, OpenAI Inc. It was founded with the goal of advancing digital intelligence in a way that benefits humanity as a whole. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) – highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work – is used for the benefit of all of humanity.
Timeline and history of OpenAI
Founded in 2015, OpenAI initially concentrated on creating AI and machine learning tools for diverse activities. Its initial release was an open-source toolkit for building reinforcement learning algorithms (OpenAI Gym), leading it to shift its focus towards broader AI research purposes.
In 2018, OpenAI introduced the concept of a Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a neural network (a machine learning model) that emulates the human brain and is trained on datasets. Following this, in 2021, DALL-E was launched—a visual counterpart to ChatGPT, allowing users to prompt the generative AI model to generate images. Subsequently, ChatGPT was unveiled in November 2022, quickly gaining popularity as the leading chatbot and generative AI tool, capable of generating responses for chatbots, answers to survey questions, and even crafting resumes.
